Oxygen, particularly the one produced by cellular respiration, is not always a friend. Indeed, it is involved in the formation of chemical species called free radicals. Free radicals are formed by the body in a natural way, but their production can be increased by some factors such as the sun, pollution or smoking. These molecules will damage cells and accelerate cell aging, and the more present they are, the more harmful they are. This is called oxidative stress.
To give you an example: avocados turn brown when opened and exposed to the air. The cells become damaged and age more quickly as a result of oxidative stress. It's therefore common to add lemon juice to avocados, as it contains a high dose of antioxidants.
How can antioxidants help your skin?
This is when antioxidants come into play. These molecules have the ability to trap free radicals and neutralise them so that they can not attack healthy cells. They not only have positive effects on your health, but also on your skin. For example, they help prevent skin damage, prevent the formation of wrinkles, limit the appearance of brown spots and control inflammation such as rosacea.
Where can you find antioxidants?
IN YOUR FOOD:
Antioxidants can be found in a large variety of foods such as seafood, fish, oilseeds (hazelnuts, etc.), some fruits and vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes and red fruits.
IN YOUR COSMETICS:
Antioxidants can also be found in your skincare routine. For example, edelweiss, green tea, sea buckthorn and wild rose oil are true superheroes in protecting your skin from oxidative stress. These superfoods are harvested for us in the microclimate of the Himalayas, making their concentration of antioxidants exceptionally high.
