How to take care of your skin while wearing a face mask

by Anke De Boeck |

Due to the health crisis we are going through, wearing a face mask has become a necessity. However, you may have noticed that your skin is getting irritated and/or oily. Do you know what this is due to? When your face is covered by a mask, heat and humidity on your skin increases, clogging pores more easily and causing inflammation and thus acne and skin irritations.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you avoid what is now called “maskne”.

Cleansing is key

To get rid of oil, sweat and bacteria it is very important to cleanse your skin before and after wearing your mask. Once you get home and take off your mask and wash your face to get rid of any sweat and dirt that’s built up during the day. That being said, try not to cleanse your face more than three times a day.

We recommend the double cleansing method. First, use the oil cleanser Recette de Pureté, that cleanses and removes impurities while maintaining the moisture balance of the skin. Second, use Rosée de Roses as a toner for clearing remaining oil off your skin and closing the pores.

Keep your skin hydrated

Using a moisturizer doesn’t only allow you to hydrate your skin, it's also very useful when it comes to protect your skin from external aggressions such as sweat, bacteria and mask irritations. As your skin may get oily due to the mask occlusion we recommend using a light day cream such as Daisy Delight. It's suitable for every skin type and contains hyaluronic acid for extra hydration. It will keep your skin’s oil production normal and thus reduce breakouts and skin imperfections.

Always wear a clean mask

Wearing a clean mask is more efficient in protecting yourself and others from the virus. It is also highly recommended to wear a clean mask if you want to avoid bacteria causing skin imperfections. Therefore, always wash your mask responsibly and if necessary, wear different masks throughout the day.

Do not wear too much makeup under your mask

Wearing both makeup and a mask can result in clogging of your pores and consequently skin breakouts. If you still want to wear makeup we suggest you to choose very light products.

Take care of your lips

When wearing a mask for long periods of time, the sensitive skin of your lips can become irritated. A hydrating lip balm such as Le Baume by CÎME will help you nourish and protect your lips to keep them soft and supple.

Wash and hydrate your hands

To stay safe during the health crisis it's highly recommended to you wash your hands regularly. Choose a hand wash that gently and deeply cleanses your hands without dehydrating them such as our Nuts about You hand & body wash. When you are on the road, you can use a hand sanitizer: it's efficient but it may dry and irritate your skin when used too often. Using a cream such as For your hands only is the perfect solution for keeping your hands soft and smooth.
